A Brief History

W.S. Bessett Inc was incorporated in 1921 by founder Worthington Scranton Bessett. The original manufacturing was done in Lynn, Massachusetts. With most of the work being for the local New England shoe industry. Worthington was an excellent engineer, handling both the design and manufacturing.

As his reputation grew, he brought in several young go-getters. Among the group were Harold Waitt and Ray Cutler . These two would eventually form a partnership and run the company after Worthington's passing. The partners continued expanding by pursuing opportunities in the automotive and furniture industries during the 1970s. At which point Ray decided to retire, leaving Harold Waitt as the sole shareholder and president.

In 1982, the company was moved to Sanford, Maine. Here a new facility was built and computer numerical controlled equipment was introduced. Michael Waitt, Harold's son, was the champion for modernizing the processes. This allowed W.S. Bessett Inc to bring in more complex work thanks to the incredible repeatability of these new machines. W.S. Bessett Inc moved down the road to our current facility in 1998 with an expansion in 2000. Here we house multiple CNC mills, heat treat furnace, and sheet metal fabrication equipment.
